Introduction & Context

Introduction & Context

According to McKinsey, a survey with nearly 31,000 global mobility users found that half of car owners desire increased use of in-car connectivity features, such as remote control over vehicle functions.

Importantly, electric vehicle (EV) buyers are more inclined (69%) to utilize such connectivity services, compared to 47% of traditional car owners. This suggests that there is a strong demand for remote control features like air conditioning, particularly among the growin EV market.

Challenges & Objectives

Challenges & Objectives

The goal of this study was to develop an app that addresses the primary needs of modern car owners. The main challenge was understanding how this workflow would fit seamlessly into their daily routines.

Recognizing the strong market adoption of vehicle integrations allowed me to see how my solution could simplify users' lives and make car usage more practical and convenient.

My first step to develop this solution was to empathize with the users and investigate:

- Their context

- Who they are

- What they do

- How my solution might impact them

Understanding the users

Understanding the users

To understand the user scenario, I built a persona based on the empathy map.

The empathy map helped me to understand what does the user do, hear, feel and see.

Also, I could imagine what are their main pain points and needs.

The A/C Remote Control App is designed to bring convenience to car owners by enabling remote control of air conditioning settings. Core features include remote activation, allowing users to set temperature and fan speed, and a scheduling option for routine-based comfort. The app’s intuitive interface with saved temperature presets simplifies adjustments.

To enhance the app (maybe on a future study), additional features such as user feedback options and system diagnostics—like maintenance alerts for filters—help users maintain optimal A/C performance. Integrations with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Siri, and Google Assistant will enable voice commands and location-based triggers, activating the A/C as users approach, providing a practical, secure, and efficient solution for modern vehicle owners.

Pairing

Pairing

To pair their vehicles with their phones, for safety reasons, there is a confirmation through the car's multimedia.

A six digit code is displayed on the car's screen for the user to validate the connection through his phone.

Also, if the user can't find his code he can find a guide on how to solve the problem.

The connection between the phone and the car may take some time…

So why not learn more about how you can control your car remotely and discover how you can integrate them in your daily basis while you wait.

A/B Testing

A/B Testing

Throughout the project, many ideas have came to me. I have built two versions of the home screen.

One of them trying to mimic the analog controller of the A/C and another one with a more modern solution.

To validate my idea, i made a quick A/B test with close friends of mine who owns high-end cars.

Home Screen

Home Screen

The most waited screen. Your car is fully connected and now you can remotely control the temperature.

The main functionalities on this screen are the possibilities to:

- Control more than one vehicle

- Turn on/off your A/C remotely

- Adjust the fan Intensity

- Check the inside temperature of the car

- Set a desired temperature

- Define presets for easy selecting

- Define a timer to start up the A/C
