Medcel is a platform focused on preparing medical students for approval in their medical residency, where students transition from a general practitioner to a specialist.
Medcel also offers preparatory courses for the diploma revalidation exam for students who have graduated from other countries and wish to have their diploma recognized in Brazil.

In addition to students who seek us out to prepare for the exam, in user surveys, we identified that several educational institutions offer the course as a complement to their undergraduate studies. We also noticed that many students acquire the course throughout their medical studies to use it as supplementary material.
We conducted an analysis to determine the number of users who acquired the course, along with the quantity of students from partnerships established with other institutions. Surprisingly, we found that almost half of our student base came from these strategic collaborations. A significant portion of students use the course as supplementary material, although all our communication is geared towards the goal of passing the residency exam.
In addition to students who seek us out to prepare for the exam, in user surveys, we identified that several educational institutions offer the course as a complement to their undergraduate studies. We also noticed that many students acquire the course throughout their medical studies to use it as supplementary material.

The main methodology we followed was the Double Diamond, aiming to deepen our understanding of complex problems and encourage us to present solutions aligned with the needs of our users.

We began data collection through interviews with various students from our user base, aiming to understand the current stage of their studies, their daily study habits, the main features they use, and how these features meet their needs.
Based on this information, we were able to identify user patterns within our platform, which allowed us to create three distinct personas. These personas became essential guides to inform our decisions, aiming to offer more effective and personalized assistance to each of the identified profiles.

The interview groups were divided into:

Our initial focus was on the first group, composed of students with less visibility regarding our features.
To meet the needs of these students, we proposed the main functionality of creating a schedule aligned with the cycles of medical internship. This tool aims to assist the student with a personalized study plan, adapted to the specific cycle they are undergoing in their undergraduate studies.

After presenting this initial proposal, we conducted a new recruitment, involving 15 students to test the new functionality.
The results were quite positive, with an average of 4.7 on a scale of 0 to 5 in NPS, reflecting good acceptance by students after the completion of the test.

My main lesson in approaching this challenge was understanding that sometimes we assume that our product is intended for a specific audience, ignoring the possibility of other groups finding utility in solving different everyday challenges.
In the context of this case, we identified a significant group of users who were using our platform, although it was not originally targeted at them. In addition to the solution presented, this experience was a moment of awareness for other teams that our platform has users with different objectives. Furthermore, it served as a wake-up call for future solutions that may benefit this group, which for a long time was not properly heard.
